FSW DESIGN ASSISTANCE IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Expert support and advanced training for optimum weldability

Upcoming requirements for tightness and crash-resistance as well as the need to use new materials in the automotive sector are leading to a demand for innovative part design or innovative production technologies. At this stage, Stirtec’s experts can help with their knowledge to provide a quick and clear insight into the functionality and limitations of Friction Stir Welding as a potential key technology. However, they can also dive deeper if specific information and optimal part design is required. FSW design assistance in product development often saves time and costs because FSW-compliant construction leads to an earlier verification approval for the upcoming start of serial production. Stirtec provides training and examination services to support Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers in benefiting from the advantages of the welding process Friction Stir Welding. Detailed view on the weldability e.g. requested tooling and the associated space requirements is provided by our technical experts with many years of experience in research and industrial implementation of FSW. Typical joining geometries and their benefits are covered in our standard courses followed by further assessments on quality and evaluation of welding seams. In individual workshops on-site at the customer’s facility or at the Stirtec headquarter, specific applications and the use of Friction Stir Welding are combined to ensure the requirements and optimum weldability. Furthermore, in our technology center at the Stirtec headquarter customers can get a vivid impression of FSW processes and machine equipment, giving them a better understanding of how FSW technology can be integrated into their production lines.

  • Knowledge transfer about the functionality and limitations of Friction Stir Welding
  • FSW-compliant construction including typical joining geometries
  • Tolerance expectations over the process chain (incoming/outgoing quality)
  • Analysis of international norms and standards for Friction Stir Welding
  • Quality assurance e.g. possibilities for process monitoring and weld inspection
  • 3D collision check on the customized FSW tooling for production approval

As FSW full-line supplier, we support in the provision of first welded parts and upcoming prototype production for B/C sampling to serial production equipment and turnkey solutions.
